Why I Gave Up On Hip-Hop

This is a story that ran in last Sundays Washington Post. It was written by Lonnae O’Neal Parker and is extremely insightful and observant into the current state of Rap music and some Hip Hop.

My 12-year-old daughter, Sydney, and I were in the car not long ago when she turned the radio to a popular urban contemporary station. An unapproved station. A station that might play rap music. “No way, Syd, you know better,” I said, so Sydney changed the station, then pouted.

“Mommy, can I just say something?” she asked. “You think every time you hear a black guy’s voice it’s automatically going to be something bad. Are you against hip-hop?”

    Bingo. That’s it right there. Yes…I am a guy…a white guy…as opposed to the author being a black woman. That makes no difference; I agree with what she’s saying. Hell, even the back rhythms to many modern hip hop tracks are totally unimaginative and yawn-inspiring. Ugh. But like she said, there IS still good hip hop being produced that’s fun & intelligent without being degrading. I’m not saying it all has to be some sort of intellectually-stimulating feat, but the scales are WAY the fuck off-balance…I think we can agree on that.
